Some brief Thompson history. I had traced them from Pendleton Co. back to
Orange Co. but couldn't go any further. Jeff Carr, a prominent researcher,
found a court case in Madison Co. involving settlement of an estate which
listed all the heirs at that time. Then someone tipped off Jeff that some
Thompsons by the same name were in Richmond Co. VA so he looked there and
found more

Anyway the first Thompson so far was George, living in Richmond Co. by 1700.
This is not the city of Richmond but farther east along the Rappahannock
River. George married Rebecca Williams dau. of Roger and had several
children, among them George Jr. who married Catherine Phillips in 1726.
About 1739 they moved to Orange Co., which was Culpeper Co. by the time
George Jr. wrote his will in 1755. The will was proved in 1764. By the
time the above court case came up in 1809, the area was in Madison Co.!

Note that the Rappahannock River has its headwaters in the Orange / Culpeper
area

Anyway George Jr. had about 9 children, among them my ancestor, William
(1728-1818), and your ancestor George (III ?). My William's family went to
Pendleton Co. about 1805, which is what led your branch in that direction

George (III) married Catherine _____ and had possibly 5 children: Elizabeth
(Francis Taylor), Ann (William Simpson), Joel (Sarah Thompson), Winnefred
(Cedar Hensley) and Catherine (Cypress Hensley)

Very little else is known about that family, except for Winnefred, who came
to Pendleton Co. as a widow (don't have the date)

Jeff Carr has either published or is going to publish a paper on the early
Thompsons, and the even earlier family, the Williams'. We are supposed to
be related to the Roger Williams who founded Rhode Island.
Our Roger Williams, possibly a nephew, was in Richmond Co. as early as 1664
