263"THE YOKUM FAMILY"
"The Yokum family became associated with the Lamberts through the marriage of America Ann, daughter of Alfred Yokum, to James Henry, son of James B. Lambert, Sr.
The Yokums (Yoakum) are of German origin. The first colonist of the name to arrive in America were Michael and Andreas, or Andrew, who arrived in Philadelphia, September 1, 1736. The two immigrants, brothers, no doubt, came from the Palatinate in the upper Rhine Valley. At the time of their arrival in America, Michael was thirty one years of age and Andreas was forty."
"The next the record the author found of the family was in Hampshire County, Virginia. To that region the colonists came as early as 1748 from Pennsylvania. According to the Census of Hampshire County, in 1782 the following data is recorded:
Jacob Yokum, 6 in family
Philip Yokum, 6 in family
John Yokum, 4 in family
George Yokum, 4 in family
Michael Yokum, 3 in family.
Two year later the records reveal that Michael and Elizabeth Yokum had four in family. Th eevidence leads one to conclude that Andreas died soon after coming to America or migrated to some other region of the country, and that Michael, the immigrant, was the ancestor of those living along the South Branch of the Potomac. The name Andreas disappears from the records while Michael continues to this day. Therefore, one may conclude that the present family is the offspring of Michael.
It is not the purpose of the author to trace the lines of all families mentioned above, but his aim is to devote special notice to Philip Paul Yokum, who was the father of Michael,Jr., Philip Paul married a Harness. They were the parents of three sons John, George and Michael. John married Malinda Kuydendall; George married Catherine Harris; and Michael married Elizabeth Stump of Hardy County. The date of the marriage of George and Catherine was March 13, 1795, and of Michael and Elizabeth, May 25, 1796.
The names of the children of Michael and Elizabeth Yokum in sequence of age were Riley, Alfred, Adam, Columbus, Pelina Stump and Helen Black."
