440Smith “Babe” Tillis was born June 1, 1845 in Mason County, (now) West Virginia to Richard Tillis and Elizabeth Greenlee Van Bibber. He enlisted in the Union Army at the age of sixteen and served in the 13th West Virginia Infantry until the end of the Civil War. Smith married Jane Ann McCoy on July 22, 1864 in Gallia County, Ohio. Jane was born on April 30, 1845 in Mason County the daughter of David McCoy and Elizabeth Hatfield. Smith was a farmer and they raised their family in Union District of Mason County. Jane died on September 6, 1891 and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Mason County. On August 5, 1897 Smith married Mary A.D. King in Mason County. Smith died on November 9, 1918 and was buried in New Antioch Cemetery, Red House, Putnam County, West Virginia.
