Early-Day Artist, Eugenia J. Brown, Laid to Rest Here
Eugenia J. Brown, many years ago a private art teacher in Adams county, was laid to rest here Wednesday, June 3.
"Grandma Gene," as she was affectionately known, was 106 years old when she died May 27 in Seattle. She had been active in her own house work and as a teacher until she suffered a storke about three weeks earlier.
She was born May 9, 1858, at boquet, N.Y. She moved to LeSueur, Minn., in 1883 after her marriage to Fred E. Putnam. Six children were born there, only one of whom is now living, Mrs. George Whitten of Seattle.
The family lived here for some years prior to 1908. She taught art at Ritzville, Hatton and Lind. Her oil paintings are hung in homes across the nation.
In 1915 she married S. L. Brown of Pullman, a pioneer homesteader there. He died in 1949 and Mrs. Brown moved then to Seattle.
The Rev. James Updike conducted funeral services at the Danekas chapel here Wednesday afternoon.

Passing Of Fred E. Putnam
DIED - At his home on College Hill, in this city, Tuesday morning, April 2, 1908, at 9 o'clock, Fred Elisha Putnam, aged 50 years, 2 months and 20 days of cerebral compression.
Deceased was born Jan. 31, 1858, in Wilton, Minn., and at the age of two years moved with his parents to Le Sueur, Minn. On Dec. 4, 1883, he married Miss Jemima Palmer in Worthington, Minn. He lived in Le Sueur until May, 1892, when he moved his family to Ritzville, where they have
since resided.
He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father; to his friends the soul of fellowship. He was taken suddenly ill Saturday morning and never regained consciousness, death claiming him early Tuesday morning.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist church this morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. B. E. Koontz officiating, and paying a beautiful tribute to the memory of the deceased.
Besides the devoted wife, he leaves two sons and a daughter.
