BIOGRAPHY: Was the wife of Dwight D. Eisenhower, who served as president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. As first lady, she closely oversaw the domestic operations of t he White House. She generally avoided politics, believing political advice and comments were not part of the firs t lady's role. Mrs. Eisenhower was a highly popular first lady. Many women imitated her styles, including her hairstyle, which featured bangs, and her fondness for pink clothing. Mrs. Eisenhower, whose maiden name was Mamie Geneva Doud, was born in Boone, Iowa, on Nov. 14, 1896. She was the last first lady born in the 1800's. Her father had a successful meat-packing business. When Mamie was an infant, the family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. When she was about 8, the y moved to Colorado and settled in Denver. Her parents also bought a vacation home in San Antonio. At the age of 14, Mamie began spending winters in San Antonio. In 1915, when she was 18, she met Dwight (Ike) Eisenhower in San Antonio. Eisenhower, then an Army lieutenant, was stationed there. Mamie Doud and Dwight Eisenhower married on July 1, 1916. They had two sons, Doud Dwight, born in 1917; and John Sheldon Doud, born in 1922. Tragedy struck the family in 1921, when Doud Dwight died of scarlet fever at the age of 3. John Sheldon Doud became an Army officer and diplomat. Dwight Eisenhower stayed in the military most of the time until he ran for president in 1952. The family moved numerous times as his assignments changed. When she became first lad y in 1953, Mamie Eisenhower took firm control of the housekeeping operations of the White House. She approved most men us and inspected the work of the staff for cleanliness and neatness. She was regarded as an excellent hostess at White House social functions. Mrs. Eisenhower showed little interest in politics and seldom offered her husband advice about how to do his job. In addition, she avoided public comments on political and government matters.

BIOGRAPHY: Born in Denison, Texas, he graduated from West Point (1915), then served in the Panama Canal Zone (1922-24 ) and in the Philippines under Douglas MacArthur (1935-39) . In World War II Gen. George Marshall appointed him to the army's war-plans division (1941), then chose him to command U.S. forces in Europe (1942). After planning the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, he was appointed supreme commander of Allied forces (1943). He planned the Normandy Campaign (1944) and the conduct of the war in Europe until the German surrender (1945). He was promoted to five-star general (1944) and was named army chief of staff in 1945. He served as president of Columbia University fro m 1948 until being appointed supreme commander of NATO in 1 951. Both Democrats and Republicans courted Eisenhower as a presidential candidate. In 1952, as the Republican candidate for President, he defeated Adlai Stevenson with the largest popular vote up to that time. He defeated Steven son again in 1956 in an even larger landslide. His achievements as President included efforts to contain Communism with the Eisenhower Doctrine, but he made little progress in reducing international tensions, yet the soldier in the White House helped keep the world at peace. He sent federal troops to Little Rock, Arkansas to enforce integration o f a city high school (1957). When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I (1957), he was criticized for failing to develop the U.S. space program and responded by creating NASA (19 58). In his last weeks in office the U.S. broke diplomatic relations with Cuba. Eisenhower was the first president whose term of office was limited by the Constitution. The 22nd Amendment, which became law in 1951, limits a president to two full elected terms. In 1960, the Republicans nominated Vice President Nixon to succeed Eisenhower as president. Nixon lost the election to the Democratic candidate , John F. Kennedy. Eisenhower left office in January 196 1 and retired to his farm at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where he raised cattle and wrote three books of memoirs. After a series of heart attacks, Eisenhower died of heart failure on March 28, 1969. He was buried in Abilene, Kansas where a library with his papers opened to researchers soon afterward. Good leadership, he believed, was not a matter o f issuing orders and enforcing obedience. Instead, an effective leader inspired others to cooperate and to use their own talents to the fullest. Eisenhower was an organized , thoughtful, and patient executive. People throughout the world loved the tall, baldheaded man they fondly called " Ike." His broad grin and friendly manner could put almost anyone at ease.
