Notes for Delmer Leroy Snyder
1578Delmer Leroy Snyder, 86, a former resident of Hendricks, and more recently a resident of Colonial Place at Elkins, departed this life early Saturday morning, Sept. 13, 2008, in Colonial Place.
He was born Sunday, May 7, 1922, in Mineral County, a son of the late Oley J. and Rachel Gertrude Collins Snyder.
On Sept. 5, 1943, at Baltimore, Md., he was married to the former Grace Louise McCrum, who preceded him in death Sept. 23, 2006. They had celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Surviving are two sons, Earnest Leroy Snyder and wife, Erma, of Hambleton, Denzil Ray "Denny" Snyder and wife, Aleta "Snoozie," of Fairmont; two daughters, Janet Louise Long of Parsons and Vera Virginia Hedrick and husband, John, of Hendricks; two brothers, Kelly L. Snyder and wife, Viola, and Donnie E. Snyder and wife, Mary, all of Hambleton; three sisters, Kathleen Stonesifer of Pa., Eileen Walton and husband, Harry, of Parsons and Viola Kyle of Ohio; six grandchildren, Cindy, Todd, Michael, Michelle, Tabitha and Melyssa; and seven great-grandchildren.
Proceeding him in death was one brother; Virgil Forrest Snyder.
He attended the schools of Tucker County. He quit school and joined the Civilian Conservation Corp to help support his family. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the attack of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He was a construction worker and worked for the railroad. He was a former employee of Kingsford Charcoal Co., and at the time of his retirement, he worked as a truck driver for the West Virginia Division of Highways. He later worked at the Parsons Nursery. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and he helped raise money for the Veterans Wall in Parsons. He attended the Parsons Church of God. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and very patriotic. He first fought for his family and later fought for his country.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Eli Hostetler will officiate and interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery at Thomas where the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign War will conduct full military rites. Grace Louise McCrum Snyder, 82, a resident of Hendricks, departed this life Saturday evening, Sept. 23, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins.
She was born Wednesday, April 23, 1924, at Humbert, Pa., a daughter of the late John Paul McCrum and Sarah Miller McCrum. On Sept. 5, 1943, at Baltimore, Md., she was married to Delmer Leroy Snyder, who survives. They celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Surviving are two sons, Earnest Leroy Snyder and wife Erma of Hambleton and Denzil Ray “Denny” Snyder and wife Aleta “Snoozie” of Fairmont; two daughters, Janet Louise Long of Parsons and Vera Virginia Hedrick and husband John of Hendricks; one brother, Paul McCrum and wife Freda of Ohio; one sister, Jean Smith of Wisconsin; six grandchildren, Cindy, Todd, Michael, Michelle, Tabitha and Melyssa; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Luther McCrum; and one sister, Pauline Yeager.
She attended the Hendricks Hill School. She worked for the former Parsons Nursery and the former Tucker County Hospital for many years. She attended the Pentecostal Church at Rosendorf and later the Parsons Church of God of which she was a former Sunday school teacher. She was a homemaker, a loving mother and grandmother. Shopping was one of her favorite pastimes. She was a noted cook. She truly enjoyed time with her cat Noah.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Tuesday, Sept 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. The Rev.
