William VanDevender, 68, Whitney, TX

   William “Willie” Everett Sweeney VanDevender, 68, of Whitney, TX passed away on June 6, 2008 at a hospital in Clifton, TX, of colon cancer and heart failure.
   William was a former Weippe resident. He was born April 13, 1940 at Orofino. His parents were Charlotte Mourning of Emida and Everett William VanDevender of Weippe. He was adopted by his grandmother, Mrs. Buena Vista VanDevender, Weippe, at the age of 3 ½ months.
   William was raised with the VanDevender family. He attended school at O.K. District #30 and also at Weippe Elementary and Pierce High School.
   He moved to Texas at age 14 to live with his father, Everett VanDevender. After finishing high school he joined the U.S. Navy where he was a Seaman Medic Third Class E4. He was on Navy duty during the Vietnam War.
   William was employed at an airplane factory in Fort Worth, TX after being discharged from the Navy. He married Sheila Roberson of Fort Worth. They had two sons, William Everett VanDevender II and Scott Thomas VanDevender, both of whom reside in Texas. Sheila died in 1998.
   In 2003 William married Jaylene Kite Baltierra, who survives him at their family home in Whitney.
   Other survivors include several grandchildren, a brother Harry J. VanDevender of Vancouver, WA, a sister Mildred McCollum of Clarkston, WA and many nieces and nephews of the VanDevender family. He is also survived by three brothers at St. Maries, Buck, Bill and Chuck Mourning.
   His mother, Charlotte Sweeney Mourning, passed away March 15, 2007. His adoptive mother (grandmother) Mrs. Buena Vista VanDevender passed away in 1956.
   Other family members preceding him in death include his father Everett VanDevender, sisters Elizabeth Parsley, Pearl Mann, Viola Dickson and Gertrude VanDevender and niece Donna Lou Day. Also preceding him in death were a brother, French VanDevender of Morgantown, WV and infant brother Ralph Wilson VanDevender.
   Services were held June 12. William was buried with full military honors at Hillcrest Garden of Memory at Whitney in the Veteran’s Cemetery.
