2238During Civil War-served in Company E, Fifth Infantry from August 22, 1862 as a private in Co E, 15th Regiment of WV Infantry in the Civil War to June 20, 1865. On the 19th day of October 1864 while engaged with the confederate enemy at Cedar Creek, Virginia he was taken captive and Oct 23, 1864 was sent to Richmond, VA military prison. He was transferred to Salisbury, NC on November 4, 1864 where he was infected with Typhoid-Pneumonia fever. After the war he was paroled March 1, 1865 at E. Ferry, NC. He was transferred to Camp Parole, Md and on March 12, 1865 was transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio for recover and eventual discharge.
John and his family purchased 500 acres of land in Canaan Valley, Tucker, WV Nov 25, 1872 from Wm. and Sarah Erwin for the sum of $1500, and in April 1873 moved from Fellowsville, WV to Buena, Tucker County, (Canaan Valley) WV.
He was the second permanent settler in Canaan Valley after Solomon Cosner.
John is buried in the Nine Cemetary behind the Lodge and below the minature golf course.
