Notes for Adonijah Jordan:
179Jordans were known to be in West Virginia as early as 1818. On January 4, 1847 William and his wife Elizabeth Carr Jordan, daughter of John and Abigal Carr had a son named Adonijah Jordan. At age of fourteen he joined as a private in Captain Lambert's company, in 1861 and when his time was up reinlisted in Captain Samson Snyder's company of West Virginia state troops and served through out the Civil War until April 1865. In 1870 he married Amanda Nelson born May 24, 1856 daughter of Isaac and Susan Porter Nelson, daughter of George Porter and Sarah Tingler. To this union were born 16 children:
J. Jordan, H. Jordan, Fleet, Okey, Baxter, Brannon, Tallehassie Jordan Edmenson, Blanche, Jessie, Hetzel, Clintwood, Caddie, William.
Adohijah followed farming in early days. At one time his father William owned the land that Job, West Virginia was built on.
In 1909 the Jordan family moved to Idaho, then in 1912 moved to Gildford, Montana.
He took up homestead on 320 acres. Due to health reasons he moved back to Weippe, Idaho.
Adonijah and sons were mostly over six foot and well built men. He took up farming and logging in Idaho. Grandson of Adonijah, Baxter Edmenson of Oregon remembers as a child when his Grandfather came to stay a few days with Harvey and Tallhassie Edmenson. Harvey bought a new cow which he was proud of. Harvey took Adonijah out to the barn to look her over and show his father-in-law what a good deal he made. The snow was about four feet deep in the pasture. The cow was in the barn area. They got out to the barn and, Harvey went in to get his pride and joy. The cow was a little spooky she took off out of the barn on a dead run. As Harvey didn't want the cow to get away, when she passed he grabbed her tail. The cow kept on going as Harvey was running with the tail in his hands. Then she kind of made a sharp turn to the right and that picked Harvey up off his feet and threw him in the air and he landed in snow which covered his whole body. Adonijah was standing and watching this and started to laugh. Adonijah kept laughing so hard he fell over in the snow as he was laughing.

H. R. 1321 Adanijah Jordan, alias Adonijah Jordan, alias A. D. Jordon, alias A. D. Jurden, alias A.D. Jourdan, aged 81 years, whose post-office address is Weippe, Idaho.
His military history is set forth in an excerpt of a report from the records of the Comptroller General’s office, as follows:
With Further reference to your communication of December 18, 1928, wherein you request to be advised whether the State of West Virginia was reimbursed by the United States for the service of Adanijah Jordan in Capt. Sampson Snider’s and Captain Lambert’s companies, West Virginia scouts, I have to advise you that the rolls of Capt. Nathan Lambert’s company of independent scouts, West Virginia State troops, show that Adanijah Jordan was enrolled as a private and mustered into service on January 12, 1864 and served to January 7, 1965. He was paid on said rolls for a service of eight months and 16 days.
The name of Adanijah Jordan is not borne on the rolls of Capt. Sampson Snider’s company of independent scouts, West Virginia State troops, but on said roll is borne the name of one A. D. Jordon, Jurden, or Jourdan, who was enrolled as a private and mustered into service on March 13, 1965, served to April 15, 1965, and was paid for a service of one month and two days.
The payments referred to above were made by the State of West Virginia and said State has been reimbursed by the United States.
The evidence presented indicates that claimant is identical with the soldier of record named in the foregoing report. The service indicated does not give title to pension under existing laws for the reason the organization in which the service was rendered was organized for State purposes only. It will be observed that the official report shows that the period of his service was for more than 80 days; that the service was honorable in every way and that the soldier received an honorable discharge. Also that the organization to which he belonged became an integral part of and cooperated with the Federal forces and that the State was reimbursed for his services by the United States.
Your committee has heretofore given favorable consideration to claims of this character, and in the circumstances does not hesitate to give this claimant a pensionable status.
The medical evidence shows that he requires the constant aid and attendance of another person by reason of dropsy, right inguinal hernia and disease of urinary organs, heart, and lungs.
He has a homestead of 320acres of dry land which is nonproductive and unsalable, the value of which has not been disclosed. He has no income.
No one is legally bound to his support.
It is recommended that his name be placed on the pension roll at the rate of $50 a month.
